Ballito lies about 40 kilometres north of Durban on the Dolphin Coast, in the KwaDukuza municipality and the iLembe district. It was established in 1954.
The town has three main malls: Ballito Lifestyle Centre, The Odyssey and Ballito Junction. Shoppers move between them and the beachfront, picking cafés from Google Maps.
A 2.5 kilometre promenade runs along the beach, and Salt Rock, Sheffield Beach and Zimbali are close by. Visitors walking the coast look for coffee, lunch and ice cream nearby, so hours and photos need to be current.
Ballito is reached on the N2 toll road and the coastal M4, and there is a business park on the N2. King Shaka International Airport and Dube TradePort are a short drive south, which brings business travellers as well as holidaymakers.
With so many visitors passing through, reviews do a lot of the work. Short, personal replies from the owner show that a shop, restaurant or service is run with care.
Ballito is the main shopping town of the North Coast, with Ballito Junction, motor dealerships and service firms drawing customers from up and down the coast.
The suburbs include Ballito proper, Ballitoville, Shaka's Head and the Umhlali Golf and Country Estate, and the area takes in Shaka's Rock, Umhlali and Tinley Manor Beach. Shoppers type those estate and village names, so listing them on Google pays off.
The nickname Dolphin Coast comes from the dolphins and whales seen along this stretch of shore. Visitors swim at Willard Beach, surf at Boulder Beach and visit the crocodile farm.
Families from uMhlanga, KwaDukuza and oThongathi send children to schools in and around Ballito, so school runs and term dates also shape when people shop and eat out.
Netcare Alberlito Hospital and the Ballito Clinic serve the town, and a commercial business park beside the N2 holds many service firms.
Salt Rock grew from sugar country. Basil Hulett, grandson of the sugar pioneer Liege Hulett, developed it in the early 1930s, and builder Rorvik finished the 30 room Salt Rock Hotel in 1933. A rule keeps buildings to two storeys, and families still swim at Granny's Pool, a tidal pool locals name when searching.
SA Tourism notes that bottlenose dolphins can be spotted all year, that King Shaka's grave memorial stands at KwaDukuza on the Zulu Heritage Route, and that Indian temples and markets recall indentured cane workers. Heritage visitors staying here look up guides, curry houses and day trips.
