Gqeberha is the city many South Africans still call Port Elizabeth, or simply PE. The Eastern Cape Geographical Names Committee recommended the change, and Gqeberha is now the official name. It sits in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro, together with Kariega, the town formerly called Uitenhage.
The two names matter on Google. Customers may type Gqeberha, Port Elizabeth or PE, sometimes in the same week. Your address follows the place name Google uses, but your description, your services and your replies can use the names people really say, so nobody wonders whether you are in the right city.
Summerstrand, on the coast near Humewood, is home to three Nelson Mandela University campuses, along with beachfront restaurants and places to stay. Inland, suburbs such as Walmer and Newton Park have their own mix of practices, shops and family businesses that rely on neighbours finding them on the map.
Many people still search for Port Elizabeth or PE rather than Gqeberha, and some say Nelson Mandela Bay. A good profile reads well whichever name a customer uses, so your description and replies can mention the city by both names where it fits naturally.
Summerstrand, Walmer, Newton Park and the beachfront each have their own regulars. A guesthouse near the beach is judged on its welcome and its view, a Walmer practice on how easy it is to book, and a Newton Park shop on whether the hours on Google match the door. Replies that speak to those details read like a person wrote them, because one did.
Examples of real kinds of searches, and what a strong profile shows for them. These are examples, not ranking claims.
“guest house Summerstrand”
Visitors decide from photos of the rooms and the view, and from how you answer reviews. A calm, specific reply to a complaint often wins the next booking.
“restaurant Humewood beachfront”
People search on the promenade, phone in hand. Opening hours, a current menu photo and recent reviews do the work in seconds.
“student accommodation near Nelson Mandela University”
Parents read the reviews closely. Replies that answer questions about security, transport and the lease build confidence before anyone calls.
“mechanic Port Elizabeth”
Some customers still search with the old name. Mentioning Port Elizabeth naturally in your description helps them recognise you.
Beachfront trade in Summerstrand and Humewood swings with the Eastern Cape school holidays and the December season, when visitors arrive from inland. Student areas follow Nelson Mandela University's terms. Set seasonal hours on your profile before the rush rather than during it, and add a short Google post about what is on, so the profile looks run by someone who is there.

Your address will show the name Google uses. You can mention Port Elizabeth or PE in your description and replies where it reads naturally, so customers using either name recognise you. Don't add a city to your business name, because Google's rules don't allow it.
Yes. Kariega, Gqeberha and the rest of Nelson Mandela Bay, and anywhere else in South Africa.
Yes. On Reviews Answered we write and post the replies for you within your plan's monthly limit. If a busy month looks like it will go over, we tell you first and agree what to do.
Most of the work happens over WhatsApp, email and calls. If you'd rather meet, Shaun comes to you, anywhere in South Africa. We don't have an office in your city.
No one can honestly guarantee a Google ranking. Google says local results mainly depend on relevance, distance and prominence. We work on the parts you control: an accurate, active profile and steady, specific replies to your reviews.
WhatsApp us your listing link and tell us what is wrong. We look at the profile as it stands and tell you what we would fix first.
