Rustenburg sits below the Magaliesberg range and is North West's biggest city. It sits at the heart of the platinum belt.

Safari traffic to Pilanesberg rolls through Rustenburg, stopping for groceries and tyres.
Mine shifts mean many people need food and services outside office hours. Exact hours, including early or late opening, help them choose you over a business that only looks open.
The name means town of rest in Afrikaans and Dutch.
Phokeng is the capital of the Royal Bafokeng Nation, and England used Rustenburg as their base camp at the 2010 World Cup. Olympia Park hosted games in the 1995 Rugby World Cup.
Shopping centres include Waterfall Mall, Rustenburg Mall, Sun Central, Greystone Crossing and Platinum Square. Historic sites include the Anglican Church from 1871, the Dutch Reformed Church and the Zinniaville Jamme Mosque.
Visitors come for golf, hot air ballooning, climbing, hiking and the Ten Flags theme park. Magaliesburg is close by, with restaurants and outdoor activities that draw weekenders from Gauteng.
Rustenburg is the most populous municipality in North West. Summers are very warm and winters mild, with occasional night frost.
Rustenburg was established in 1851 as an administrative centre for an Afrikaner farming district producing citrus, tobacco, peanuts, sunflower seeds, maize, wheat and cattle. The Reformed Churches in South Africa were founded here on 10 February 1859.
Kgaswane Nature Reserve, a 4,257 hectare reserve in the quartzite peaks above town near Waterfall Park, welcomes hikers and drivers. the Pilanesberg game reserve lies beyond.
The Hex River drains northward into Bospoort Dam, which supplies water to platinum mines and central suburbs. The Elands River flows into the Crocodile River system nearby.
Boitekong lies on the northeast side. Clinics, pharmacies and NGOs there rely on listings people can trust.
Paul Kruger bought the farm Boekenhoutfontein in 1862 and lived there with his family from 1873. The Heritage Portal describes five historic buildings that form the Paul Kruger Country House Museum, restored by the Simon van der Stel Foundation in 1971 and opened as a museum and restaurant in 1983.
The farm passed to Kruger's descendants after his death in 1904 and was declared a national monument in 1971. Kedar Heritage Lodge operates on the property, so weekend visitors, wedding guests and conference delegates search for heritage stays, guided museum visits and country dining.
