Sandton at a glance

Sandton is part of the City of Johannesburg, but it trades like a city of its own. Much of the country's top grade office space is here, and the JSE moved its offices to Sandton from the Johannesburg city centre in 2000. That brings a weekday crowd of bankers, lawyers, consultants and their clients, all searching on their phones between meetings.

Sandton City is one of the largest shopping centres in the southern hemisphere, and Nelson Mandela Square sits right beside it, renamed in 2004 when the six metre statue of Mandela was unveiled. Restaurants, salons, clinics and shops in and around the two centres compete hard for the same visitors, and the map pack is where many of those choices are made.

The Gautrain's flagship station is on the corner of West Street and Rivonia Road, so many customers walk over from the Gautrain station. A profile that says how far you are from the station, where the entrance is and whether there is parking saves people a walk round the block. Getting the pin onto the right door matters more here than almost anywhere.

Liliesleaf in nearby Rivonia, where the 1963 arrests that led to the Rivonia Trial took place, draws visitors and school groups to the area. That is worth remembering when you choose photos and write a description.

Sandton was once a municipality of its own, and its name joins two of its suburbs, Sandown and Bryanston. Customers still say Sandown or Bryanston when they search, so naming the suburb you trade in on your profile helps people match you to the place they know.

Trading notes for Sandton

Sandton runs on the working week. Offices empty over the December break and on long weekends, while Sandton City and the square stay busy. Freedom Day (27 April) and Workers' Day (1 May) fall within a few days of each other, so set both sets of hours on Google at the same time.
