How we handle your information

What this site counts, what it never collects, and what we do with the details you send us. Written for South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).

Who we are

Local Heights looks after Google Business Profiles for local businesses in Cape Town and Durban. We are responsible for the personal information described on this page. Our information officer is the owner, Shaun. Email us at [email protected].

What we count

To see which pages help people, we count:

  • anonymous page visits
  • the campaign tags in a link you arrived from (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign and utm_content)
  • the name of the website you came from, such as google.com
  • which buttons and links are clicked
  • how far down the homepage you scroll
  • your device type (mobile or desktop)
  • your country

Campaign tags are kept in your browser’s session storage so they follow you from page to page. They are cleared when you close the tab. If your browser sends Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control, we don’t count your visit at all.

What we never collect or store

  • your IP address
  • your browser’s user agent (the line that names your browser and device)
  • cookies, because this site sets none
  • anything you type into a tools page, which stays in your browser

To count roughly how many different people visited each day, we make a one-way code from your connection details and a random value. That value changes every day and is deleted the next day. So we can count visitors for that day without being able to identify you, and the code can’t be traced back afterwards.

Cloudflare Web Analytics

Our host, Cloudflare, also counts visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics. Cloudflare says it does this without cookies or local storage, that it does not log the query string of a page address, and that it does not collect or use visitors’ personal data. See Cloudflare’s privacy policy.

What you send us

If you message us on WhatsApp or email us, you choose what to share. That is usually your name, number, email address, business details and your message. We use it only to reply and to work with you. WhatsApp is run by Meta and our email is run by Google. We don’t keep marketing lists, and we never sell or share your details.

Where it is processed

Our anonymous counts are stored with Cloudflare in its European region. Email is handled by Google and WhatsApp by Meta. These services may process information outside South Africa.

How long we keep it

  • Anonymous visit counts: 24 months, then they are deleted automatically.
  • Messages from people who don’t become clients: deleted 12 months after our last contact.
  • Client records: kept while we work together, plus what the law requires for invoices and tax.

Your rights

Under POPIA you can ask what information we hold about you. You can also ask us to correct it or delete it, or object to how we use it. Email [email protected] and we’ll reply within a reasonable time. Our visit counts are anonymous, so we can’t link them to you.

If you’re unhappy with how we handled your information, you can complain to the Information Regulator at inforegulator.org.za or [email protected].
